Reader Reviews:If Learning Chinese You Must Buy This (0/0 people found this helpful)This is an excellent book along with its companion Vol.1. For anyone learning the Chinese language this book is essential - lovely large print characters make ease of reference, especially for anyone partially sighted or merely short sighted. A pleasure just to hold and browse through the purchase of this book for Mandarin learners - or Cantonese pupils, to an extent - is a prerequisite. Those learning Cantonese must remember they will not find it easy to reference Yale Romanisation as the book obviously uses Pinyin Romanisation. Nonetheless if the learner were to purchase 'Teach Yourself cantonese' by Hugh Baker and Ho Pui-Kei each Yale-sysem Romanised conversation is accompanied by the Chinese characters whcih helps tremendously in contrasting Mandarin and Cantonese with the aid of this text book. A great workbook (1/1 people found this helpful)This is a book for writing in. It shows stroke order, and has spaces to practice each character. However, it also has lots of interesting context and examples for each of the 250 characters. Definitely a book for grown-ups, as there is not a picture or a colour to be seen. There is an alphabetical (pinyin) index as well as a radical index. There are quizzes and review sections.
Excellent tool (17/17 people found this helpful)This book is a clear, practical and helpful resource for anyone studying Chinese characters. Each page gives stroke order, meanings, common compound words, blank squares for writing practice and pinyin for a different character. Volume I covers 250 of the most frequently used characters. An additional useful feature are the exercises (word finds, word-matching games, etc.) included after every 10 characters. Volume II follows the same format and introduces a futher 250 characters.
