Reader Reviews:cooking for life (1/1 people found this helpful)This book is terrific. I am cooking for a diabetic so we are on low carbs as a way of life. This book really opened up our variety. I found most dinner recipes to be very flexible and give me a great base on which to work from. I do make modifications at times to adhere to even lower carbs necessary for a diabetic trying to control blood sugar. I have had not trouble finding ingredients even way down here in Cornwall. Since dessert, cake and cookie recipes are not an option, neither is strict measurement but the book is not metric which I prefer. Use this as an inspiration if you are committed to cooking low carb. Disappointing (8/10 people found this helpful)I thought this book would give me plenty of ideas to break the monotony of my low carb diet. I was disappointed. This book just doesn't work in the UK. There are too many ingredients I can't find or have never heard of. A lot of the measurements are in cups but I don't know what size cup to use. And the one thing I really wanted to try was the bread machine recipes but so many of the ingredients are impossible to find here that I haven't found a single one I can make. If you're in the UK don't bother with this one. Good book for ideas. (3/3 people found this helpful)The updated version for the UK market isn't as well updated as it could be, for example not all the "american" type foods have been updated to an UK version, and the odd receipe reads "1 cup of, chopped and boiled" Which is slightly frustrating..but I've only noticed this on two receipes. In the main this is a good book with a wide variety of different foods, most of the unusual ingredients can be bought from well establish and well known health food stores, and the better supermarkets are stocking items like chocolate extract. However, I think the most value for UK low carbers is to use this book as a starting point for developing their own receipes based on ingredients they buy! A good all round book, especially for newcomers to low carb. 500 low-carb recipes (11/13 people found this helpful)This is a truly fantastic book! I've read alot of low carb recipe books but this one has been uodated for the uk market so you can actually understand it too! The recipes are great too, more 'normal' than some of the way out american ones. The author also lists some great web sites where you can buy the ingredients needed for the recipes. The stuff you need is really hard to get in local health shops, so this alone is worth it's weight in gold! The products needed for these recipes are pretty much the same for all low carb recipe books, so once you build up your stock cupboard you can use them with any low carb cook book. The recipes are vast and varied, something for everyone and the book is also very informative. It gives you the low down on low carb diets and also on products which need to be used with caution. Well worth the money! Not for UK (5/11 people found this helpful)Though the recipes I've been able to try from this book are very good, I'm very disapppointed that there are so many hard-to-find ingredients. Some have been impossible for me to find, such as soy powder, and rice protein powder, among others. Some things, such as tinned tomato sauce and frozen spinach, we can substitute for. Substituting ingredients is second nature to me, being an American living in England, but there are some things that are just impossible to substitute. Also, the measurements are only in metric, which I find irritating. I know we're all supposed to be metric now, but honestly, most kitchens in the UK are set up as imperial and metric, and my kitchen is set up for those, as well as American! So the metric-only version is hard to live with. All in all, good ideas, but hard to use.
