Disappointed to say the least (0/0 people found this helpful)

One of my fave authors, I have read all of her books so far with none being as disappointing as this. Very repetitive, I sometimes felt I was reading the same lines again!!
Saved it for my hols too - what a waste!!

A Disappointment (0/0 people found this helpful)

I came here half expecting to be a lone voice criticising this book, I am relieved to find I am not alone. What a disappointment! Too many faces, too much crudity, the language was appalling in places, stilted writing and - did anyone notice this - everyone, everyone either sipped or gulped their drinks/tea/whatever until I wanted to scream. I read it, hoping it would get better. It didn't. The book was overlong, over large, hard to hold, (I had the hardback version) needed drastic editing (where was the editor? I just complained of lack of editing on another review, here is a classic case of an editor not doing their job) and a lot of revision to turn the book from TELL NOT SHOW into SHOW NOT TELL. Cut the language, Martina, we are not impressed. Bad language does not make a character come to life any more than if he spoke relatively normally. OK, he is a 'face', he will use bad language but ... not this level and not this frequent and not, often, in this context. I know Essex, I know Dagenham and Romford very well indeed. You did not bring them out in this book, or any of the people, either. Remember you are writing for your fans, so dump any current thoughts you have for your next book, as you are bound to be carrying on from this one in some way, and go back to the drawing board. Let's have vivid characters, real people, in real settings, with genuine storylines and twists and turns and things to hold us until the last page. Write any more like this, and this fan for sure will pass you by and head for the other people who do deliver, Lee Child et al.

Repetitive (1/1 people found this helpful)

This is the first time I am writing a review on Amazon, but as an avid Martina Cole fan, I was so disappointed with this book that I have to shout it from the roof tops. The book is so repetitive that you could skip 4 pages each time you saw her go into the same description over and over again without missing the plot! I have never taken so long to read a book, but felt I had to insist to see if it would get any better - it doesnt. Over 600 pages that could have been written in 200!! Repetitive, boring and no story. Let's hope she's back on form for the next one!

No, no, no Repetative (1/1 people found this helpful)

Come on Martina you can do sooooo much better than this. Normally I devour your books, this one took me an age and I only finished it in the hope of a story. This book could have been a few hundred pages lighter.!!
Can we get back to your better books with a real story line please

Boring (0/0 people found this helpful)

One of the main rules we authors are taught, is show don't tell.

Martina Cole Tells.

The telling is repetitive to the point where she uses the same line twice on the same page.

There is hardly any dialogue in this 500pg book. Which is a shame as this is where the hard-edged scenes come to life.

There are so many ( faces) characters mentioned that readers get confused with who is who.

Faces may have been an enjoyable read if Martina wasn't so repetitive, telling us what we already knew from the previous chapter.

Very disappointing for a best seller.
