Reader Reviews:Britain's "infamous army" and the Waterloo Campaign (17/19 people found this helpful)Ian Fletcher has a gift for relating the personal experiences of the protagonists with the military and strategic situations as the campaign developed. The story is unashamedly told from the British point of view, and makes the case that Waterloo was an Allied victory, at the core of which was Wellington's refusal to be intimidated by Napoleon's reputation, and the fighting ethos of the British army. The mauling at Quatre Bras and Ligny receive due attention. The illustrations are particularly good, contempory paintings and Victorian reconstructions are reinforced by well chosen photos of the battlefields as they are now. Authoritive and well written, it is a salute to the grit, professionalism, and bloodymindedness of Wellington and the army that had to live up to the reputation won in the Peninsula.
