This is a Dover reprint of A.W.Smith's classic, which served as the precursor of William T. Stearn, "A Gardener's Dictionary of Plant Names" (1972), later "Stearn's Dictionary of Plant Names for Gardeners" (1992). Comparing original and successor it is obvious that a great deal of similarity exists, with many entries a 100% identical. The major differences are that the book by Stearn has a more modern layout, is updated and contains more information.
This reprint of the original has as bonus points that it is cheaper and includes directions at pronounciation. In some cases it also contains bits of information which were edited out of its modern descendant.

A useful reference book for those wishing to know more about the history and mythology of plant names, with information on more than 3,000 plant names. There are some interesting anecdotes, although the entries would benefit from a little more humour and a hint of the derring-do exercised in the discovery and collection of many of the plants. There is an easily-understood introduction to the botanical naming system, an index to link the most common names of plants with the botanical name, and each entry has a guide to pronunciation. Altogether, a good addition to the bookshelves of any gardener, and particularly those who are worried about these strange, foreign names that botanists insist on attaching to plants!
