A Sound Academic Approach to the History of the Troubled Country (2/2 people found this helpful)
This book covers the history of Israel/Palestine from the 1850s to 2003. It seeks to provide an overall objective view of the history of this area encompassing the activities of all the players; the Turks, British, Jewish and Palestinian people, and tries to avoid a partisan approach. Some readers will see this as 'post-Zionist', but for those interested in a history as accurate as it can be at the present time this is a good book to read. Pappe makes a sustained attempt throughout the book to inform the reader of the everyday existence of the common people, buffeted by events and trying to cope with violent shifts in their lives, as well as the actions of the political elite on all sides that is usually portrayed as the history of a country. The approach is academic in style and probably aimed at University students. Thus you will not find any rounding-out of the characters of the leading players in the political action, or excitement in the relating of dramatic events.
