Immerse yourself in Nature (3/3 people found this helpful)

I bought this book as a sixth former after reading newspaper reviews when it first came out. Little did I know then, as a teenager, how much it would capture my imagination and effect my outlook on The Highlands. However I'm not going to comment on Mike Tomkies writing style, just on his content. Try the 3 page trick. Open the book and start reading - if you get to page 3 without noticing it (and you will) then this book is for you.

Mike's decision to isolate himself does not at first appear to be an easy one, either for him to do or for others to contemplate. However with some knowledge of his former fast-paced life, and mindfull of the comment that often the loneliest place is a crowded room, you may soon begin to understand his reasons. Through this book it is brought home that an apparently empty Glen is in fact home to many things..just not human ones. However this is not a 'high-flying man gets dissatisfied and throws in the towel to find himself' story. It is an account, by a man who has become one of Britains best naturalists, of the dynamics of one of this country's few last wilderness areas. The behaviour of the creatures he lives amongst and that of his dog provide a comprehensive picture of how a truly wild place functions. A lot of Mike's experiences are enhanced by his dog's presence, both by it's ability to detect and by its nature as a gentle giant. At first their relationship is not an easy one, but often - as it proves in this case - that is how the strongest ones start.
If you have ever driven through Scotland and looked off over the lochs and into the hills and thought 'I wonder what it's like over there'? then buy this book. Let Mike feed your wanderlust and make efforts to discretely and quietly go there yourself one day.

lost wild places (1/1 people found this helpful)

If there is anyone who can capture the reader of their books in the first few sentences, that person is Mike Tomkies. His passion for Wildernesse shows throughout the book. Has achieved a great deal of knowledge over the years in all his natural subjects, no more so in his other brilliant books about the wildcat. Vivat Mike Tomkies. & god bless moobli.
