Lineage of grace series (8/9 people found this helpful)

My friend gave me the first one of these to read and then I simply kept returning to her house so i could read the next book- they are that good, they are the best series I've read for a long time. I disagree with the comment about the book about Mary- I really enjoyed it, it made me think and understand so much more, (it was one of my favourites, my other being ruth). Though of course the comment that you have to remember that these are only based on the bible is very true, it is always important to question things, but having said that i found her research to be incredibly thorough and thought provoking, and with every christian both fiction and non fiction book sermon etc you need to assess the information your being presented with so i didn't find that a problem. Can't wait to read the mens series.
Hope you like them as much as me!

Read with caution (24/26 people found this helpful)

This was my first experience of Francine Rivers' writing. My initial response was that of excitement at seeing Bible characters come to life. This was especially so for the first three books ( Tamar, Rahab, and Ruth) - which really brought home how God graciously intervenes in undeserving people's lives.
My biggest concern for the book as a whole is about the way it approaches the Bible. In the first three, Francine's perceptive insights and comments are thought-provoking and encouraging. However especially with the one on Mary, details about Jesus' life are expanded in ways in danger of obscuring the truth and which I felt goes too far beyond what the Bible even implies.
I would recommend this series with the reservation that it is read for exactly what it is - novels *based on* Bible characters. It would be great if the excitement at seeing such characters come to life would encourage many to read the Bible (more) for themselves.

Heartwarming and Challenging (17/17 people found this helpful)

I have yet to find a Francine Rivers' book that has disappointed me - the thorough research of the times in which the characters lived is obvious and the imagination of how these women of faith would have acted and felt is incredible! The book also contains thought provoking Bible study questions which would work well in a study group and for personal challenge. I loved particularly the touches of historical information which give us insight into what life would have been like for the people then!
An excellent collection - well worth reading!
