Let's clear up some confusion here. Golf courses are not the same as 'countryside'. There is no such thing as a 'natural' golf course. They are man-made areas where a game is played. Ok, a pleasant enough game which people enjoy, which some may use instead of 'countryside' as exercise in the fresh air.

The management of a golf course does not have the same goals as the management of the countryside. There are other considerations for a start - what does the FEE PAYING golfer want from his course? As an absolute fundamental, he wants to be able to play where he has paid for and he expects a certain level of quality. He is not stupid, he understands the need for course maintenance, but let's not pretend that that involves saving the great British countryside or something.

If golf courses needed the sort of green-bandwagon management Peake advocates, they would ALL be in such a poor state that alternative management methods would ALREADY be employed.

Golf courses are not natural. They are outside and have trees on them. This is not the same thing.

Golfers are as environmentally aware as anyone else. They may even have the notion that they are enjoying the countryside while they are playing. Fair enough. But the main consideration for the golfer is an acceptably playable and pleasant course.

Sustainability is a given in golf course management - for commercial reasons. Let's not pretend that we go to our course to witness the saving of the planet (as we get there in our Chelsea tractors!)
