Reader Reviews:Utterly moving and thought-provoking... (1/1 people found this helpful)Not usually a fan of the crime genre, I was attracted to this book by its evocative title... and having read Ellory's 'Candlemoth', I knew I'd be in for a more profound read than might otherwise be expected from a classic 'whodunnit'.
Refreshingly original (1/1 people found this helpful)I read this book on the recommendation of my son. He felt I could do with a change from what he calls my `routine crime/police/forensic thrillers.' I am pleased (and surprised!) to say that, for once, he was right! I found this book addictive, and refreshingly different. The writing, particularly the childhood scenes set in Georgia, reminded me of "To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee." The book has strong characterisation, especially that of Joseph and the schoolteacher (Alex), and a very interesting and yet moving plot. I will most definitely read more of Mr. R J Ellory's work. stunning (2/2 people found this helpful)This was definately one of the best books I have read. A crime novel but so much more. Such a brilliantly crafted story. I was completely consumed with it, simply could not put it down. I have since purchased all the other novels by mr ellory and so far am equally impressed with all that I have read. What an amazing author. A very talented author (2/2 people found this helpful)I picked up this book almost by accident as it was on offer at my local store and I expected an easy, run of the mill read but from the first chapter I knew this book was different. This book was a totally compelling read and I was unable to put, just had to find out what happened to Joseph Vaughan, the poor man. The richness of the writing and description of characters and landscape were first rate (it was interesting to find that the author is from Birmingham). This book stayed with me for a long time and I have now read all but one of his other books which were just as mesmerising and unforgettable (although this one remains my favourite!). Mr Ellory is very talented and a very fine storyteller. A Quiet Belief in Angels (2/2 people found this helpful)I absolutely loved this novel! I couldn't put it down! I found myself living Joseph's life when reading this book. Totally compelling! The suspense did not end until the very end of this book when I was so disappointed that I was almost finished reading it. I will most certainly be readin more of RJ Ellory's books.
