Excellent choice of stories, strong translation & introducti (12/12 people found this helpful)

Unusually perhaps, most of the work in this collection I had previously read, I read in Russian. It is striking to me that in reading Bartlett's translations I see the same scenes as before, only more clearly. This is beautiful work - by Chekhov and translator alike. This thoughtful selection of stories is chronologically arranged, from Chekov's earliest seriously literary writing right up to "The Bishop", in which the author seems to anticipate his own death. You can follow Chekhov's development in this well-judged mixture of shorter and longer short stories, assisted if you wish by an excellent introduction that considers his place in the history of literature. The discussion of Chekhov as realist versus modernist writer is especially interesting.

Stories included are: "The Huntsman" (1885), "On the Road" (1886), "The Letter" (1887), "Fortune" (1887), "Gusev" (1890), "Fish Love" (1892), "The Black Monk" (1894), "Rothschild's Violin" (1894), "The Student" (1894), "The House with the Mezzanine" (1896), "In the Cart" (1897), "The Man in a Case" (1898), "Gooseberries" (1898), "About Love" (1898), "The Lady with the Little Dog" (1899), "At Christmas Time" (1900), and "The Bishop" (1900).

A very Entertaining collection (7/8 people found this helpful)

This is one of the most enjoyable books I ever read. The odd characters made it all the more funny. Being a recent peruser of Russian books and having developed an interest in them, I am up and ready for more Russian stories. The stories are deep, witty and humorous in a classic way. The Usurper and Other Stories, Master Man and other Stories, Union Moujik-- are fine and hilarious books to read.
