Editorial Review:Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Classroom in a Book features consistently well-written and conceived lessons, which are part of Adobe's official training and certification programme. They guarantee solid instruction, taking readers step by step through professional-level projects with top-notch artwork. Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Classroom in a Book assumes no prior knowledge, and beginners will benefit from the slow and deliberate pacing. However, more experienced Photoshop users won't find it difficult to speed ahead through familiar material, and there's a thorough index for troubleshooting specific problems. It will help to find new techniques to make workflow more efficient, and, perhaps, "unlearn" any bad habits (for example, getting a better grayscale conversion for a colour photo by using the Channel Mixer rather than clicking "Mode > Grayscale"). Chapters cover the fundamentals: the work environment and help resources; making selections (with the wand, lasso and marquee tools); using layers and masks; working with the pen tool and other vector graphics techniques; retouching and colour correcting; selected effects such as hand colouring; colour-management issues; and creating images for print or the Web. Areas new to version seven include working with the File Browser, using the new paint engine to create custom brushes and patterns and working with the healing brush and cloning stamp. All lesson project files and fonts are on the companion CD-ROM. Each lesson begins by outlining what will be learned and how long the project should take, and ends with review Q&A. The colour section not only shows finished artwork for several projects, but also includes some useful reference pages: a toolbox overview (with colour illustrations of what each tool does), a layer blending mode sampler and a set of images helpful in colour management. In addition to the above topics, the book also shows how to create slices and optimise images in both Photoshop and ImageReady, make rollovers and animations in ImageReady and use droplets for batch processing. You may not become a power user after these tutorials, but you'll certainly have a firm working knowledge of Photoshop upon which to build expert skills. --Angelynn Grant, Amazon.com Reader Reviews:adobe photoshop 7 Classroom in a book (18/22 people found this helpful)I have found this book really helpful considering I didnt know a thing about Photoshop to begin with. I constantly use it for reference. I think it provides a good base knowledge. The perfect companion for PhotoShop 7.0 software. (54/54 people found this helpful)I bought this book after buying a digital camera, and the PS7.0 software. Clearly Helpful (80/80 people found this helpful)I bought this book when I bought Photoshop, because I find a manual easier to negotiate than some of the software help lines. The book breaks the system down into bite sized pieces, which with a progamme as complex as photshop is necessary. you can jump in anywhere you want, or go through it in order, also because the CD is with the book you can repeat any lesson as often as you need too. Each lesson is simple to follow and keeps you focused so that you finish each step feeling that you have accompplished something, instead of wandering aimlessly through the programme and remembering nothing. The review Q&A at the and of each section also lets you know how much you've really taken in and the book is always there if you forget halfway throgh a project what the order of something is, you can instantly locate the relevant chapter and refresh you memory. Adobe Photoshop 7 - Classroom in a Book (44/46 people found this helpful)The book does what it says on the front - Guides you simply, quitely and scholarly through the mass of techniques offered with the parent software. To complete the training in a classroom situation, were that available, would take a lot more time and money than the book. Another advantage is that you learn entirely at your own pace and can repeat the sections you are particularly interested in at any time by just reloading the apprpriate lesson from the CD provided. Excellent value and much easier than the Help within the Software which is also very good. Keep it handy (24/44 people found this helpful)Not the most inspiring of books and I was left with the feeling that it had been written by someone who was not overly keen on the job. I found it hard work and it reminded me of the all too dry school books of my youth. Having said that it is, as you would expect, an invaluable source of reference and is one of those books that should be on your shelf if you are new to Adobe Photoshop 7.
