Great but remember to use Rails 1.2.6 (0/0 people found this helpful)

This book is very well structured and written but if you are new to RAILS remember to use version 1.2.6 to avoid incompatibility issues.

Hopefully we'll get a new version soon with all the examples compatible with RAILS version 2.0.

Great Starting Point (0/0 people found this helpful)

This book gave me a great starting point for building an e-commerce website in Ruby on Rails. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to dive into Ruby on Rails.

New to Rails? Don't think twice. Buy this book (2/2 people found this helpful)

I don't normally leave reviews of books on Amazon, but I wanted to for Agile Web Development with Rails. Why? Simply because this is SUCH a good book.

I came to Rails (and Ruby) cold, though with a Java and C background, and this book got me up and running in a remarkably short space of time.

It is very well written, wonderfully easy to follow and pitched at a good level to be of use to complete beginners and more experienced developers alike (the start is for newbies, the back end for more clued-up coders -- which you will be by the time you get there). I'm already on my second independent Rails app (not counting the tutorial one in the book), and I'm astounded how confident I feel with it already!

Thoroughly, thoroughly recommended, as is the companion book 'Programming Ruby' - which helps fill in the full details about the actual Ruby language if you need to get your hands properly dirty.

Lovely book to learn rails (2/2 people found this helpful)

This book is very well written, easy to read and covers everything you need to know to get productive with Rails. However, I've been spoiled by Dave's 'Programming Ruby' book, which is so complete as to have entirely replaced the need for Internet searches. While 'Agile Development with Rails' is very comprehensive, I have still found the need to occasionally search elsewhere.

So if you want to get started with Rails, this is surely an excellent book to buy. But if you want to know everything, you will need this book and one more (I'm still looking for that one).

From Novice to Professional (4/4 people found this helpful)

Well what can I say? There are a number of books out there that boldly proclaim that they can assist readers in the transition from novice to the nirvana of professional programming. Whilst many do fulfil their promise, I'm certain that very few of them make the transition as enjoyable an experience as Dave does in this exceptional offering.

Being versed in a number of languages/frameworks, I'm used to sitting at a desk with a mammoth of a book and working my way through it. However, I have to honestly say that the way in which this book is written makes it both simple and enjoyable for those new to concepts such as OOP (Object Oriented Programming) and the MVC way of life(Model, View, Controller), let alone Rails (By the way, that'll all make sense once you've worked through the book).

Not being one to make empty statements, I borrowed the book to a friend that is a designer, with no real interest in programming (might I add), to give it a test drive. Long story short, he's kept the book and I've just ordered another. Knowing that I was going to write a review he asked me to quote him, so here goes... "By the time I finish this book, and have messed around with a project or two, I'll have to change my business cards to designer/developer!" I think you get the picture.

To wrap it up, I love this book. For those that are new to any form of programming, please don't be intimidated. Dave has made Rails as easy to learn as it is powerful, which is great for those wanting to 'cut their teeth' on Rails. However, this book is written for both the complete novice and programming guru, explaining things in enough detail to enlighten entry level programmers, but not quite enough to bore the more advanced.

In a word Dave, Kudos!
