Here is Beauty in all its Guises (2/3 people found this helpful)

Beauty is the most fickle thing. It is the one thing that have completely sensible, intelligent, well-read, successful women running after mindless new trends, spending an incomprehensible amount of money on whatever that claims to give them what they most wish. A person can be physically beautiful yet so uninteresting, or be completely ordinary in the appearance, yet becomes stunning after one gets to know him/her. It is the most fleeting quality of a person, yet is the one thing that people get most unreasonably obsessed with.

When Alek first came into public eye, I was in my early - mid teens, but I was immediately captured. I found her face so interesting, her smiles true, and so... there. Just there. Not plastered on, not practised, but there. Her skin I can imagine is silky smooth perfect ebony. I was immediately hooked. Hers is one of perhaps only 3 faces that I can easily pick out from a whole full page of pictures of supermodels. She is not like anyone else. And I pre-ordered and read this book in one day, I know that indeed, she is not like anyone else. Few supermodels can have a life as hard as this. She went through things that I only read about and can only imagine, yet she went away from it in tact. She didn't become hard and cynical, sure she's strong, but she's not harsh and difficult. Her lack of vanity and un-self-conscious beauty shine through even in words. This is an autobiography with a political edge and packs a punch like none other celebrity biographies. This is one supermodel that mere appearance and years cannot touch. I can imagine her still full of energy, good thoughts and spirit even in her 80s. I read this book, inspired and yet feeling the need to hang my head in shame when I think of my own obsessions with certain aspects of my appearance. You just don't know how lucky you are.
