ESSENTIAL READING FOR '60s/'70s MUSIC-BIZ DEVOTEES (0/0 people found this helpful)

Anyone interested in the pop music business - especially from the '60s to the '80s - will lap this up. Selwood, though never an MD of a major label group, was nevertheless a successful and respected executive at several key UK companies and labels. Crucially, he loves the music and here takes us on a tour of his roller-coaster career during a more buccaneering music-biz era before the accountants and lawyers took over. Spiced with plenty of hilarious and often mind-boggling anecdotes about the big stars and the big industry players, this well-written memoir is a "must" if you worked in that sector at the time, or simply find the nuts and bolts of pop music fascinating. Good insider info on his friend and colleague John Peel, and the "how to" bits still have common-sense relevance today. One star held back for Clive's cavalier attitude to dates, however.

A modern classic (0/0 people found this helpful)

Clive Selwood was a major force in the music industry for at least 4 decades and has written one of the few essential books about the UK record business. It's packed with anecdotes about big nams - stars and suits - and also points to many of the potential pitfalls in this rather dog-eat-dog world. But, refreshingly, it is not at all bitter. And unlike the classic US books of this genre, it is packed with humour; whereas lesser men would rage at the various injustices, the author retains a sense of wry puzzlement at some of the more bizarre skulduggery and downright dishonesty. There are also excellent sections on marketing, lawyers and other industry knowhow. Highly recommended to music fans and budding stars or entrepreneurs alike.
