A book that made me look forward to the journey to work (1/1 people found this helpful)

James Patterson is an amazing author.

Warning: if you read one of his books, prepare to spend more money on more of his books.

Along Came A Spider is a very high paced thriller with many twists and turns. I read this book mostly during my journeys to work and the journeys never seemed long enough.

I would highly recommend this book and author to anyone.

Along came a disappointing read! (1/1 people found this helpful)

It's hard to put into words just why `Along came a spider' didn't quite do it for me. Could it be the irritating narrative, the short chapters and the lack of characterisation? Or is it that the books jumps ahead of time so quickly it's difficult to tell what is going on half the time, the central character has nothing new to offer, most characters are 2D, the twists only come in the final pages and even they are a little tame, predictable and hardly deliver any shock value.

The story has its moments, but there is no real action to carry along the drawn out plot. Perhaps the most irritating and noticeable flaw is the lack of description. You have to struggle to picture what is going on half the time, with journeys, hours and even days being elapsed within just a short sentence. Perhaps this was an attempt to keep the plot moving, but to be honest I wanted more from this book. If Patterson had allowed room for just a tad more detail then this book could have been vastly improved. Instead he leaves it up to the readers mind to imagine faces, rooms and places. The second half just consists of interviews that offer nothing new to the story or character arch. All characters are 2D, uninteresting and quite frankly if they all exploded and died a painful death at the end you probably wouldn't even care. I didn't care and that's why I didn't finish this book. I found myself reading for the sake of finishing it and that's when you know its time to give up and except the fact that this book just isn't that good.

The blurb promises a good gripping crime thriller, but what is written is something that is both dull, flat and lute warm. If this book was a colour it would be badge. Neither worth the time nor money and although I can't say this book is especially bad, neither can I say that it is good.

This is an absolutely brilliant book- a pure James Patterson thriller. If you like anything to do with crime, mystery or thriller then you'll love this book!!!

What a drag (0/1 people found this helpful)

The plot was all over the place, story just dragged and dragged. Alex was made to look more like an idiot than a so called intelligent cop. I got so frustrated several times but forced myself to finish the book. I bought the Kiss the Girls, now I am not sure I want to read it, after this load of rubbish.

Allowing the mad man Murphy/Soneji to get away with murders twice was just ridiculous. He should have been shot dead not partially wounded. The judgement was sick, he should have been sentenced to death just like the bad cops. I think Patterson is better when writing with other authors. I prefer the Women's Murder club series and Sail. I haven't watched the film and I don't think that I will. I'll rather watch a rubbish reality show.

My 15 year old daughter loves the Maximum Ride series - are the adult books written by this author suitable for her age group? What good books bridge the gap between child and adult fiction?
