A cautionary tale (1/1 people found this helpful)

This cautionary tale illustrates how pre-conditions set by the IMF serve to open markets within developing nations to predatory competitors from the established economies of the Global North. It can never be equitable to expose the novice to unfettered competition from the master. The structural adjustment requirements of international financial institutions work well within the mathematical models of the Chicago School; the fact that national economies fail to conform to the model is excused by externalities contaminating the market. Or, is it that the fundamentalist followers of neoliberal economics live more in the myth of the model and cannot see that a political economy extends beyond the profit and loss of the balance sheet; knowledge is never perfect, information becomes skewed and biased and people are not rational. Argentina crashed into bankruptcy because of the imposed structural adjustment; it was a hindrance, not the heralded solution as suggested by classical economists. The trouble is we continue to plumb the depths as we pursue greater market efficiency, resulting in the race to the bottom as national economies seek that elusory competitive advantage over one and other.

A classic insight into the IMF and it's failings. (2/2 people found this helpful)

With the IMF being increasingly seen as the saviour of the EM sphere, this book is a chilling account of the ineptitude and political chaos that is epedemic in this institution. Argentina in 1998-2001 was an accident waiting to happen as the IMF tried to prop it up, eventually making the situation worse.
This book pulls no punches. It exposes the players and suggests ways of preventing it happening in other countries. It is a crying shame that much of the advice here will be ignored by policymakers.
It is a must read book for anyone in an emerging market economy. I hope a few copies find their way onto the desks of those working at the IMF.
