I am constantly in awe witnessing the effect this collection of stories has upon anyone who reads them. The tales are at the same time succint, powerful, educational and, in some way, romantic, although the overriding subject is possibly one most choose to shy away from. A collection of stories for children, decades ago delivered to children verbally, set in Europe during the most difficult war years, is not perhaps the most appealing for parents. However, the tales are remarkable: the conditions in which they were written, extraordinary. Above all, they are lovely fables created by a feeling man (André Trocmé). I was fortunate enough to have met the author's wife (Magda Trocmé) and my children are his great grandchildren. My boys are proud to offer "Angels and Donkeys" to all of their friends because the stories are so different and "out of the box". Well done, Nelly, for bringing these stories to the forecourt again. A good lesson for children and, forgive me, their adults.

What a rare and precious thing - a book to inspire compassion in children and adults, without heavyhanded moralizing. Nelly Trocme Hewett and Good Books have done the world of children's literature a great service in translating Pastor Andre Trocme's one-of-a-kind stories. Words do instill courage - in the people of a French mountain village 50 years ago, and now, thanks to this lovely little book, in the hearts of people everywhere.
