Excellent Cop Thriller (0/0 people found this helpful)

An African American civil rights lawyer is murdered. Was it robbery? Or was it something to do with the many LAPD cops that he has taken to court on behalf of clients over the years?

This is my second Connelly book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was gripped throughout the 400 pages. The characters were excellent and the story had lots of twists (some of whhich you didn't see coming). You really get a feel for post Rodkey King LA in this book.

If you enjoy crime/cop thrillers then I strongly reommend this book. 9/10.

Flight of the Fantastic (6/6 people found this helpful)

'Angel Flight' tells the next adventure of disgruntled LA cop Harry Bosch. A highly media exposed lawyer has been murdered and the police are the main suspect. The lawyer made his name by suing the LAPD and in doing so made a lot of enemies. Can Bosch and his two partners sort through the politics and lies to see what the truth is. With red herring's and misdirection everywhere it looks like this could be Bosch's hardest case to date.

Connelly has produced yet another great read in 'Angel Flight'. It does not do much to progress the characters but highlights why we like Bosch and his dogged everyman style. The book is fast paced and enjoyable throughout. The darkness may not appeal to some but I felt was necessary for the book to work.

One area in which I felt this book fell down was the wrapping up of the case - I will not go into details but it is becoming increasingly clear that Connelly needs to find a new way of finishing his stories.

Apart from this small gripe 'Angel Flight' is a great read and one for all crime fans.

An excellent read (4/4 people found this helpful)

This is the first of Michael Connelly book that I have read and I was pleased to find that it wasn't the same as so many other books of its type. There was just the right level of uspense and the characters were well balanced. However, the book did seem to tail off without fully wrapping up the story and I would have liked it to have gone on for longer. Despite this, it was still an excellent book.

Gripping and true to detail. (15/15 people found this helpful)

I read this book on the flight to the U.S. which initiated my move to that country several years ago. Having spent a couple of months in L.A. in 1991 just prior to the first Rodney King trial (which was to spark the upheaval this book, in part, draws on), at a time when tension was already palpable in the air, "Angels Flight" immediately brought back my memories of that time. Having lived and worked in Los Angeles again for the past three years, I can appreciate even better Michael Connelly's excellent insight into the politics of this city and the situation of the LAPD, where, with the "C.R.A.S.H." scandal, the ghost of the old beast has recently reared its head again. Connelly's rendition is true to detail in every respect - even his description of the ongoing struggle to define the role of the "inspector general," whose position was created as a response to the Rodney King trials and tribulations; who as yet, however, has not been as effective as the creators of that office had in mind.

"Angel's Flight" was Connelly's first book I read, and it immediately drew me into the Harry Bosch series. I have since become an ardent fan and am always eagerly awaiting every new installment. Michael Connelly is one of the few authors who have never once disappointed me!

Good Story But Not Much Else (1/1 people found this helpful)

Perhaps its just that L.A. is not very interesting but this story has no real sense of place. Whatever is special there is missing here. The story is good enough to keep the pages turning but apart from Detective Bosch, the characters are generic and uninteresting. Its the sort of book that reads like its written for a future movie. So I was disappointed. The fact that it was shortlisted for a CWA award, raised my expectations, which were never entirely justified.
