I have not yet been to Australia yet, but I am preparing to go there this summer (that is in Europe, winter in Australia). I love reading in this book, it gives a lot of information and is alos fun to read. I'll give more review commentary once I have returned.

If you are going to Australia this is the only travel guide you need. It covers not only budget hostels but more upmarket hotels. All of the things you need to see and the costs. I took other travel guides to Aus but this is the only one that gives you the prices of activities.
On your long flight to Aus this would be a good read. I have used Lonely Planet Guides for other countries and have to say they never fail to give the right information from internet cafes to tourist attractions. Buy it you won't regret it.

This book is a great guide to backpacking in Australia, as are all th Lonely Planet collection. However, cover was lightly damaged at the corners so wasn't in perfect condition. Since i bought it as a gift, it wasn't ideal but the scuffs were barely noticeable so didn't make too much of a difference.

Everything is here, I found no better guide, just whished maps would be better (grayscale not very clear) and main spots would be more cleary rated and signaled (perhaps in the way Michelin's Green Guide does it).
