Reader Reviews:A good ballet story, but "Ballet Shoes" is better (3/3 people found this helpful)'Ballet Shoes for Anna' was 1st published in 1972, a long time after Noel Streatfeild's earlier 'Ballet Shoes', in 1936... but I don't think it's survived quite as well & I find reading 'Ballet Shoes for Anna' that it seems to have dated quite a bit more than the timeless 'Ballet Shoes'.
Excellent - you feel like you're there, living it yourself (7/7 people found this helpful)This book is wonderful. While reading it I was unable to put it down - I was completely caught up with it, just as I am with every other book by Noel Streatfeild. The way Anna's hopes and dreams never die, despite all she goes through - the earthquake and losing her family, shows what a strong character she really is! This is a great book, and anyone who loves dancing and Noel Streatfeild books is sure to enjoy it!... Totally Cool (2/4 people found this helpful)I really love this book, and any others by the same author, It's a definite classic, and I hate Ballet, i still found it really good though! Tamara A delightful book, sure to enchant any ballet mad child. (8/8 people found this helpful)Ballet Shoes for Anna is a delightful book, sure to enchant any ballet mad little girl, and many other children and adults too. Like most Streatfeild novels, and like all the best children's books, the plot only just falls outside common events and every day happenings, and strikes a happy balance between excitement and plausability. The characters are beautifully and convincinly drawn. The main characters, the three Docksay children, brought up in a bohemian lifetsyle, have interesting and different personailities ; yet the reader never feels they are improbably exceptional children, leaving aside, of course, Anna's dancing gift. Other characters such as Anna's English dancing teacher, or Wally, the children's friend and his parents, or The Uncle ialso make for amusing or touching reading. Ballet Shoes for Anna, more than the other 'shoes' books perhaps (children who enjoy this one will almost certainly love reading the more famous Ballet Shoes, or White Boots or Dancing Shoes) is something of a social study. It is a loving and essentially accurate of life in suburban Britain in the early seventies. Read Ballet Shoes for Anna and discover how the Docskay children ultimately found happiness there.
