Competent and helpful (11/11 people found this helpful)

As a Ballroom teacher in training, it's possible to look at the content of this book from a more objectve point of view than the target audience.

Trying to interperet the language used and pictures provided, I was surprised that it was easy to follow and interperet, as there is a general disregard for teaching books on the whole.

Although it is possible to get a general feel of the dance, it is not an encyclopedia of dance, and will not satisfy those who wish to learn and progress. Fortunately, I do not beleive it was ever the author's intention to solve all dilemas, but more to provide a way of getting started without commiting to lessons. With this in mind, the book is without doubt a success.

The text is laid out logically, with sensible words that do not confuse the reader. Covering dances that are familiar to most (ie: Waltz, Slow Foxtrot) there is a good variation that offers different styles to suit (ie: Quickstep, Tango). This, I feel, is a good introduction for all ages and abilities.

Although not a raw beginner, I also found that the language used was invaluable as it could be understood by anyone from first-timers trhough to my also-impressed dance coach!

In conclusion, this book is a good value introduction to dance, and cannot be faulted as a useful reference book.

I want to dance, but this is a sleeping pill (1/2 people found this helpful)

I knew enough about dancing to be dangerous. It was time to do some serious reading up on what I wanted to do. This was my first book on dancing. Sadly, it did not excite me. The steps are laid out in such a style that you must step through them in order to see them. The dance descriptions and histories were good however. This would be a good book to refresh yourself from, while you're traveling on a plane or something, but it's not a good book to learn from.
