A vivid story dulled by poor writing (0/0 people found this helpful)

...I feel churlish to complain about this book as it is written by the 70+yr old wife of an Australian Bomber Command veteran, and his story is undoubtably worth telling. Unfortunately, she chose to tell the story in the omniscient third person, crucially giving voice to his thoughts and those of his comrades in arms. This often leads to the perception that you are reading a work of fiction especially when you encounter clunking dialogue attributed to people of which the protagonist cannot have had any knowledge.

Beyond that, this covers a very courageous man's journey from Tasmania to the cockpit of a Lancaster bomber, and the events leading up to the fateful Battle Order 204. I did like the device of relating this key mission in a two page preface to each chapter in the book as it adds a real sense of drama.
