Overall, this is a phrase book with the sentences put into a whole conversation to give some context, and a few 'notes' about expressions, grammar, and cultural issues. Some might find the CD's useful if you want to hear Norwegian with a script.

This book is adequate (but not the best!!) for individuals who have previously done self study of other languages (especially any in the Germanic group) and essentially want to become acquainted but not specifically proficient in Norwegian. This book is inadequate for a first time 'foreign-language-learner'. It is also inappropriate for anyone who has a desire to eventually master Norwegian.

Specific comments:

There are a few errors in the exercise answer keys.

Important grammatical points are often buried in footnotes. Which is fine if the reader already knows the meaning and use of the 'imperative' or 'reflexive verbs', or the fact that nouns can have a gender.

There is no reference section to easily look up grammatical points. Instead you must read the Chapter description in the Table of Contents then search through the footnotes to find the particular item of interest.

The sections that do discuss grammar are almost useless.

And it really could easily have many more exercises. Beginner students need lots of practice exercises!!! The book presents well because of the heavy use of white space!!
