Reader Reviews:Decent book, good explanation (1/1 people found this helpful)I found this book to be good introduction into Java web services. It is a little out of date but the fundementals are all there and those have not changed significantly to discard this book totally.
Out of date (0/1 people found this helpful)I think it was entirely my fault for buying this book. Having read the reviews I allowed myself to believe that I would have a book which would serve as a good tutorial for building Web Services from start to finish.
An Excellent Primer (6/6 people found this helpful)Unlike "J2EE Web Services" by Richard Monson-Haefel (Addison-Wesley), this is a good book designed for those just arriving at the Web Services party. Every Java developer knows that companies such as BEA, IBM and Oracle have been jumping on the WS bandwagon and bringing out their implementations of the WS specifications and this book will show you why. This book takes you through the hype of WS and shows what can be done with good examples. Focusing more on the functions of WS such as data transfer, describing and invoking web services etc, as well as web service security and encryption and asynchronous messaging, this book allows you the developer to create working examples using Tomcat and Axis from the Apache foundation. The last 2 chapters are very useful to professional developers as they are concerned with the specifics of implementations from IBM and BEA and then a real world case study The function of this book is to teach the basics of Web Services to the reader and it accomplishes this admirably. It doesn't try to be anything other than a beginner's book (it even says so in the title!) and I would think it suitable for intermediate to advanced Java programmer with a few years experience of web development. Wrox has impressed with this one, which surprised me as I normally find their style unappealing, preferring books published by O'Reilly or Manning, but this is definitely one of Wrox's better offerings Similar ProductsWeb Services Essentials: Distributed Applications with XML-RPC, SOAP, UDDI & WSDL Java Web Services for Experienced Programmers (Deitel Developer) Professional Apache Tomcat 5 (Programmer to Programmer) CategoriesAmazon.co.uk places this book into the following categories:
