Reader Reviews:Intelligent heroine? (7/8 people found this helpful)Really, for an allegedly intelligent woman to bed a man - many times - and not worry AT ALL about pregnancy is amazing. Particularly since she is a major land owner and knows that the penalty of having a baby out of wedlock is total disgrace and banishment. Yet Madelaine and Gervaise never discuss this; apparently it doesn't enter their heads. Also for Madelaine not to realise Gervaise wants to marry her - honestly apart from having it emblazoned on his forehead he could not make it clearer. How come she doesn't see it when her family, his family and the locals all do? And she is supposed to be smart.
Not too bad (20/31 people found this helpful)The Bastian Club started well as a series and I looked forward to the latest installment. However, there's nothing new in this Lauren's title we've not seen before. Lauren's writes with a quick, lively pen, yet there's some depth lacking in her more recent works and I find myself prefering British Regency authors such as Kate Allan and Amanda Grange who combine the wit of the Regency with characters who really feel real.
