Every Bit as Inspirational as Number One (0/0 people found this helpful)

As a fan on 'The Cross and the Switchblade' I was keen to find out what happened to Wilkerson after his time in New York. 'Beyond the Cross and the Switchblade' certainly answered a number of my unanswered questions.

The book is more or less a direct sequel in as much as it follows the story of Wilkerson rather than being a theological or instructional book, although these elements are more notceable than in the original. It is encouraging to see that 'Tokens of Goodness' (as Wilkerson calls them) which he received in the first book are also not in short supply throughout this. Whilst many may dismiss these as coincidences the sheer number of them and the impact they have on the events in Wilkerson's life and the lives of those around him cannot be overlooked

This book's strength lies largely in the fact that Wilkerson's struggles following the Cross and the Switchblade are perhaps more accessible to people not involved in mission on such a large scale. Whilst his work with drug addicts and "forgotten teens" forms a large part of the book, things such as his fear of flying and his wife's run in with cancer are central and every bit as powerful as the youth rally in the first book.

I highly recommend this book, particularly if you enjoyed the original, it is probably a good idea to start with that one before moving on to this sequel. Wilkerson's life really is an inspirational story as the dramatic changes described in the lives of those he meets undoubtedly reflect.
