Editorial Review:

Bill Gates, as Des Dearlove reminds us no less than seven times between the covers of this slender volume, is the world's richest man. As such, there is no shortage of information about him, offline and on. Dearlove, who is a journalist and the author of a book on Richard Branson in the BigShots series, tries to condense dozens of management studies and interviews into "pocket science" for managers, a book which could be read in a couple of commuter journeys. In this, he succeeds admirably.

The book draws heavily on previously published material on Gates. Dearlove distils 10 "secrets" of Gates's success. These gems range from the less than helpful "Be in the Right Place at the Right Time" to the simply sensible "Hire Very Smart People". Along the way, we learn that Gates is a "rare bird" whom fortune has carried "to an altitude where his special talents could flourish". There's enough here to allow the reader to hold a half-decent dinner party conversation about Gates, but probably not enough to impress an IT Director. Having said that, if you want a quickfire introduction to Billionaire Bill, and you don't want to be distracted by too much dirty detail, Dearlove's version won't strain your wrist on the Tube. --Nigel Shardlow

Basic but useful (0/0 people found this helpful)

I'm a believer in the 'tell them what you're going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you've just told them' approach in training, and it would seem Des Dearlove believes in it for print too. Most of the information is repeated at least three times - much of it verbatim. Overall, I estimate the actual information in this 170-page book could be delivered in about 120.

Having said that, it gives a concise overview of how Gates works, and to some extent how he thinks, and is a reasonable presentation of the sources of his success, albeit in fairly simplistic form. Worth reading as a coffee-table book. NB: written in 2002 before the anti-trust case was 'resolved'.

Really a brilliant read. Entertains and engrosses throughout. Very good analysis of the person rather than the product behind him. Inspirational looking at William in this light

Quick Easy Read (0/0 people found this helpful)

I guess the first thing that you notice about the book, is how easily laid out it is. Immediately, appears an easy read.

I liked the way that Des Dearlove started off with the relevant issue surrounding the man, and I thought that Dearlove presented a balanced view of Bill Gates. He later on dives a little deeper into the 10 habits of Bill Gates that makes him such a success.

It is intended for a quick read, so don't expect a detailed explanation about Bill Gates.

All in all, a definite read for the keen IT enthusiast.

Brilliant, Captivating and Superb Book!! (0/0 people found this helpful)

I really yearn to know the secrets behind great, amazing businessman, especially Bill Gates. The only problem is I don't feel like spending disproportionate amount of time studying this great people because I have lots of things to do and I would prefer to have a concise yet truthful information about him. Well, this book serves this purpose just right! I love this book extremely because it is just concise yet interesting and easy to follow.

I am amazed by the standard that Bill Gates holds for his massive yet productive company, Microsoft! Even though this company is huge, he tries to break it down into many departments and organises it like a small, productive company.

His attitude of taking no prisoner in business competition is really, really daunting. I could imagine how other software giants like Oracle hate him! However, he is the man to look for if you want a great leader with clear vision.

In short, read this book! I have read it twice in 1 month!
