A very cultured book (0/0 people found this helpful)

I bought this book hoping for a departure from the Lonely Planet and Rough Guide type of guide. Going by the other two reviews here I felt the Blue Guide would fit the bill exactly. Sadly, I sent it back as it was unsuitable for our planned trip as it centres pretty heavily on the historical, writing in fantastic detail about the Roman ruins etc. but for us, way too much. It is also very dense and almost impenatratable if you just want a casual look-see over a cup of coffee. Ho-hum, back to the Rough Guide with regret.

Very trustworthy (16/16 people found this helpful)

This is the first time I have used Blue Guide Sicily. Being a local myself, I have always been quite pedantic and fussy about how detailed and accurate information on Sicily has been researched and presented. I can only say that this is a fantastic guide, very detailed in the historical and artistic descriptions and also very "poetic" in the "quasi-visual" descriptions of the places and of the Sicilian people. The guide gives accurate listings of hotels and places to eat and drink which are reasonably up-to-date and - thank God - not very "faddy". This is maybe a bit of a turnoff for the younger crowd looking for the "hottest spots". But if you are looking for well-established restaurants, bars and hotels with charm and history, this is the guide for you. Maybe, if I can give some advice, a little effort should be put on well presented and colourful maps, as they tend to be very schematic and focus on just the town centres. But, I have stopped using the Rough Guides and the American guides (Fodors and the like). This is an outstanding guide. Highly recommended.

most comprehensive (12/12 people found this helpful)

As a regular visitor to Sicily, i found this book the most comprehensive. All books will have a particular strong point in their favor but this one covers most topics best. One finds ( after visiting a place) whether the descriptions given reconcile , and i can say that this book gives the best picture of the actual Places.

I have also used it to find accomodation and it served me well.
