Reader Reviews:Awful (1/1 people found this helpful)Like other reviewers, I have also been a huge and faithful fan of Patricia Cornwell. Not any more. I have read the last three of her books only out of loyalty and can honestly say Book of the Dead is just about the worst I've ever read (even worse than the one (can't remember the name) where we had chapters written from the dog's viewpoint!. Thankfully, I borrowed this one from my sister and didn't waste my money.
utterly disappointing (2/2 people found this helpful)Having been an ardent fan....I now stick to Kathy Reichs & Karin Slaughter who have surpassed Cornwell at supersonic speed. I am so glad I got this latest effort from the library and did not waste my cash in buying it. I tend to read at bedtime and honestly can say that this latest book has put me to sleep faster than a cup of cocoa!!! Truly dreadful! (2/2 people found this helpful)I remember (in my youth) reading Patricia Cornwell novels at two or three in the morning and not wanting to put the book down. This latest offering has quite the opposite effect, and is a lazy effort, lacking any credible attempt to create suspense and atmosphere. The book relies too heavily of the reader already knowing the main characters and, more to the point having read the previous couple of books. The writing is not sharp and the characterisation is very flat. I had no empathy for any of the characters - without exception, and I found the plot wearying - instead of moving the action forward in a purposeful manner it lurched from contrivance to contrivance. I struggled to finish it, and really only did out of past loyalty. This book is a sad disappointment, and I cannot recommend it to anyone - even die hard Patricia Cornwell fans should steer clear. Pull yourself together Patricia (2/2 people found this helpful)From recent interviews, it appears that Ms Cornwell thinks people have got it in for her by posting negative reviews of her latest tome on Amazon.
A waste of reading time (2/2 people found this helpful)I was really disappointed with this book, it is the last time I will buy her book at full price. I might read the next one if I find it in a charity shop. She seems to have totally changed the way she writes, maybe it is a ghost writer. I find myself skipping paragraphs to see if there is something more interesting about to happen on the next page!
