Great way to get started with Vista (26/26 people found this helpful)
If, like most of us, you are new to Vista, you will need to know how to make the many new features work. This book explains what is new for PC users -- but not for technicians -- and also covers features that carry over from Windows XP. The target audience seems to be competent users in homes and small businesses. You can decide what you want to learn, then go to a double-page spread and see and read what to do very quickly. All the explanations are brief and very clear, accompanied by small screenshots, and delightfully free of gushing about the rich, wonderful "experience" we are all going to have with an operating system. Sometimes you will find that a feature is described that is disabled in your version of Vista. For example, in the two "Home" versions, you cannot back up the whole system. The organisation of the book means that you can read the sections or individual topics in any order. Over my first couple of weeks of using Vista I dipped into the book several times a day on a need-to-know basis, and learned most of what a user needs. There is no underlying technical detail, so this book is not for support technicians or software developers. Not much troubleshooting either. The whole emphasis is on what to do when your PC is running normally, and you are working in a standard way with the visible parts of Vista. I guess that you would use the book intensively for a few weeks, then it can sit on your shelf for quick reference when you try something new.
