Reader Reviews:Leave your security worries behind.. (7/7 people found this helpful)PF (Packet Filter), originally developed by Daniel Hartmeier, is OpenBSD's system for filtering TCP/IP traffic and doing Network Address Translation. PF is also capable of normalising and conditioning TCP/IP traffic and providing bandwidth control and packet prioritization. PF has been a part of the GENERIC OpenBSD kernel since OpenBSD 3.0. For those serious about security, the OpenBSD/pf combination implemented as a home or corporate firewall, provides perhaps the best defence from the inherent insecurity of the Internet. This publication from Jacek, is clear and succinct. If all you ever need to do is filter out the bad packets from trying to enter into your network, then just copy a basic rule-set and fire up pf. No further knowledge is necessary. If however you need to learn how to set up a box running OpenBSD, how to prepare the disks, how to install and then how to *increase* the security of this hinge-pin host, Artymiak explains all. Perhaps not strictly an 'entry-level' book, it does provide step-by-step instructions on preparing this all-important host. A number of architecture options are discussed such as bastion hosts, invisible bridges, etc. but all in direct relation to the book's core subject matter: security. Written by a Polish author, the english grammar is excellent although the odd word is missing here and there - but don't let this deter you! This second edition is comprehensive yet to the point. If you're serious about security - learn how to do it right first time.
