Reader Reviews:Ok but some problems (1/1 people found this helpful)This guide does certainly cover a lot of ground in a short space of time and is also good for the beginner to programming - let alone C++. However, there were certain things that caused me to become disgruntled with the book. Some of the scripts given in the text are not functional. For example, compilation and run time errors are apparent (even when using the scripts from the author's website). It seems that the authors manage to use a compiler that lets them get away with slightly dodgy code. Also some of the programming style is not the best - not good when you are trying to teach programming beginners. Despite these drawbacks, the book is written well and introduces concepts in good time with a good structure. I would recommend it as an introduction only, later moving on to a more formal book. Hopefully, later editions of the book will correct these issues. Excellent beginners guide (1/1 people found this helpful)This book is really excellent. I LOVE the 'visual quickstart' format, it makes it so easy to follow. Like the other reviewer I am racing through it, and yet I am taking it all in! I am very impressed at how comprehensive the book is, it really does explain the concepts behind things in remarkably few words - I learned more from the first few chapters of this book than ten online C++ tutorials. It doesn't gloss over technical points but instead tells you enough to understand it for now and makes it clear what chapters address the issue in full. I have a text book on C programming that makes me fall asleep after 3 pages. This book keeps me up all night! Very highly recommended (I think this review officially qualifies as 'glowing'). Definitely provides a quickstart (0/0 people found this helpful)I have not bought this book but got it from my local library. I read 12 out of the 14 chapters in about 3 days. I will admit that I have a lot of programming experience in Perl and a little with C++ as well. This book has taken me way ahead of what I knew in a remarkably short period of time. It is definitely a beginners book and if you persist with C++ you will be looking for another book soon enough. The fact that I want a more advanced book on C++ tells how good a beginners book this is. Definitely recommended for beginners.
