Unnecessary written LP guide (0/0 people found this helpful)

Unfortunately LP has decided to include books even about well organized destinations such as the Canary Island, to which most people will travel in some sort of organized way anyway. This book is rather shallow, and does not include the usual good maps. To explore in deep the islands, even for independent travellers I suggest to read one of the books written on the individual islands including routes to hike, of which there are plenty better ones available (The rough guide of Tenerife for example is much more detailled and well informing). The local tourist offices can also provide numerous brochures for both the indivdual and pre-packaged travellers including maps, list of hotels, sights etc.
LP better stick to what they are really good in: to cover places not so well organized or well written about by others. Or will there be soon a LP for Eurodisney and Benidorm?

Slim but useful (22/23 people found this helpful)

These days you might expect to find all the information you need on the Internet. However, the bulk of what you find on the net is put there by the big commercial hotels and holiday package companies. Smaller places for independent travellers are still difficult to find without a decent guide book. The Lonely Planet series has never let me down. This one is quite slim and seems at first not to have much in it, but in fact turned out to have just what I was looking for. The reason not many small independent hotels are listed is because there aren't many. The town maps are quite good but island maps are poor. Pick up a free road map at the airport tourist information if you are intending to explore, or get a proper map or specialist guide for walking or cycling
