Reader Reviews:whitewash (3/53 people found this helpful)If you're looking for intelligent analysis of the Catholic church, you won't find it here. The book is written by two priests. Why did the Catholic church give Vatican passports to Nazi torturers and murderers at the end of the 2nd world war? They fled to South america using their Vatican passports and were never seen again. In 1981 a man tried to assassinate Pope John Paul II.The Pope forgave this man 19 years later! obviously justice is more important than forgiveness. Catholicism with a Light Touch (15/15 people found this helpful)This is essentially an introduction to Catholicism for people who aren't Catholic. It covers all the main points of belief and gives a certain flavour of what being a Catholic in the 21st century is all about. Above all, it captures the humour of the Catholic world. The cartoons are worth the price of the book alone. if you have ever wondered what it is like being a Catholic, then this book is a great starting-point. Everything you need to know (21/21 people found this helpful)Sums up everything you need to know without being patronising in anyway. If you wonder what a Rosary is, it is explained. If you want to know exactly how to pray with one, it is explained. Historical details are given, as are details of shrines, pilgrimages, etc.
Undeniably useful but distinctly dodgy nonetheless (16/42 people found this helpful)This book offers a useful overview of Catholic beliefs and practices that is difficult to find elsewhere, but non-Catholics beware, this is not a book about Catholicism, it is a Catholic book. This is not for 'people of all...beliefs' as the cover blurb claims - both authors are Catholic priests and the absence of a non-Catholic voice is sorely apparent. The reader is not presented with both sides of the argument in most cases and the Brief History of Catholicism section is littered with historical inaccuracies. The treatment of contentious issues is often laughable in its blinkered approach, and some will find the content plain offensive. We are told that the Catholic Church conducted itself without any fault at all during the Holocaust, the ban on the ordination of women has absolutely nothing to do with pollution and contamination taboos, and even that Galileo did not suffer under the Church at all, but rather endured only a 'comfy' house arrest. Great swathes of the debate are missing due to the book's faith perspective, and those without a good general historical knowledge and understanding of the current critiques of the Catholic Church will go away with many misconceptions.
Beginners & returners to the faith, this is for you! (19/20 people found this helpful)I have recently been accepted into the catholic church and we used this book in our catechism classes. It is comprehensive, covers all aspects of catholicism, and proved to be an excellent guide and source of reference for me and my fellow classmates. So if you are a beginner or are interested in the faith, or are wanting to update and renew your faith, then this book is for you. It will prove to be your invaluable guide and reference.
