Mystery of the disappearance of a phenomenal talent solved (0/0 people found this helpful)

The question of what happened to George Connelly has surely been the subject of many football, particularly Celtic, fans over the years &, at last, here we get the story from the horses mouth.

This is a very honest & open account of Connelly's career & has more than enough food for thought; it certainly pushes many other footallers' biographies into the shade.

The book manages to strip alot of the romance out of Connelly being the best domestic talent of his generation & turning his back on a glittering future. It also highlights the absence of any decent nurturing of talent coming up through the ranks in what was Britain's most successful club at that time & raises the old chestnut of "where did all the money in Celtic go?" In my opinion it certainly wasn't in wages or investment in the club's facilities.

I would highly recommend this book & would suggest Archie MacPherson's "Flower of Scotland" as further reading for those interested in the (Scottish) game.

Well done, George & thank you for having the courage to be so honest.

for anyone interested in scottish football in the early seventies, the question of whatever happened to george connelly is one that never goes away. so well done to bryan cooney for answering the question at last and also well done to george for being so brave in reliving his life in all the gory detail.

this book is well written but at times it is a very harrowing read. well worth buying.

An emotional and compelling tale of one of the finest footballers to come out of Scotland. A must read for all football fans.

Excellent Biography (3/3 people found this helpful)

This is very different from the average footballer's biography. It is the story of someone who reached the heights and then threw it all away at his peak. The main thing that stands out is the total honesty of George Connelly and the recognition that no one else was to blame for it all.
Sure, there are the usual tales of the big matches but at the heart is the human story of George and his `demons'.
Recommended.
