Centurion (0/0 people found this helpful)Having read and enjoyed all the other books in the series this does not disappoint. Its a fast moving read with some awesome battle scenes with Cato and Macro getting well stuck in. This is a book for that most people will enjoy and can be picked up wether or not you have read the rest of the series (although i hope you do).
Heid Best yet!! (0/0 people found this helpful)
Simon produces yet again! If you have been following this excellent series of books like I have the latest Macro and Cato adventure wont disappoint. As you would expect the lads are in the thick of it yet again, plenty of action and even a little romance (but not enough to distract the reader or our heroes!) As an added bonus I always learn something from Simon's books too! To close, an fantastic book worth every penny. :)
Good, as per usual (0/0 people found this helpful)Does what it says on the tin, good story, solid plot, well researched, fast paced. Still nothing particularly brilliant (He's no Cornwell) but a more than entertaining read.
Liking the choice of a new title ^_^ Putting the series back on track (2/2 people found this helpful)After one so-so entry in the adventures of Roman soldiers Macro & Cato, Eagle in the Sand, Simon Scarrow puts the series right back on track with this latest book.
One of my niggles with Eagle in the Sand was that it failed to develop either Cato or Macro as characters. Part of the appeal of the series has been to watch Cato become a talented and experienced soldier under Macro's tutelage and in turn watch the rough edges be knocked off the older man by his younger friend's influence. Eagle in the Sand lacked that element of the previous books and was a weaker effort for it. Centurion on the other hand, has it in spades and by combining it with a truly entertaining and exciting storyline is one of the most successful entries in the series to date.
It also succeeds in laying the groundwork for future developments that could prove very interesting and help keep the series feeling fresh. With Centurion there is there very real sense that Cato, until now Macro's subordinate and pupil, is beginning to overtake the older man. There are also hints that the younger Centurion has it in him to rise far beyond his comparatively humble beginnings. If that is so and Scarrow does allow Cato to outstrip Macro then it will fundamentally change the dynamic between the two. The prospect of that happening in future books is an enticing one and will help maintain this reader's interest in the series. New Title, same excelletn books (2/2 people found this helpful)First thing you will notice is the new title, this in no way makes the book any different.
Another excellent adventure to get your teeth into as Macro and Cato take on the Parthian horde, corrupt officials and bickering princes, all with out breaking a sweat....well maybe a little, wisecracks and cracked heads take you on the ride of your life!
I sailed through the book and loved every page, just willing me to turn over no matter the time of night..
If your new to the series, you will love it....honest! I've had several converts in my family since i began reading Simon's books. if you've read the rest, you can expect nothing short of one of the best Eagles so far.
