As the debate hots up over Ken Livingstone's candidacy for Mayor of London, John Carvel's 1984 biography is essential reading for all political junkies. It conveys a great deal of the colour of the 1981-6 GLC administration and shows Livingstone to be an astute political operator, whatever you may think of his politics.
