boring (0/0 people found this helpful)

I have read all of Martina Coles books and loved them all from start to finsh- untill this one. I bought it in the airport before going on a two week holiday and actually had to force myself to finish it. It was boring, repeative and just re-hashing all the same old story lines. Having bought this and all her previous book new and at full price I feel I have been robbed. Will NOT be buying the next book

Repetitious, boring and facile (0/0 people found this helpful)

My first experience of a work by Martina Cole - and my last. Repeated descriptive phrases, repeated or very similar scene settings, contradictions, use of vocab that was totally unbelievable for the characters concerned, scenarios that lack all semblance of credibilty. The best thing about the audio cd was the muzak before and after (& even that sucks). The worst thing as that I paid £10 for it. Avoid unless you wish to be bored or have more money than sense.

Thankfully, not the first I've read... (0/0 people found this helpful)

Had this have been the first Martina Cole book, I read, I would probably never have read another one. I first discovered Martina 3 three years ago when I was 16, at my first job. My colleague recommended her books. I think "The Know" was the first. Being an average middle class girl from North Manchester the way other people live fascinated me.

I then devoured the rest of her published books to date and adored every single one with the exception of "The Runaway". Until "The Graft", but I felt Martina redeemed herself with "The Take". Once you have read one of Cole's books, you have read them all. It's hardly a revelation yet people are complaining about it - after the first three you realise it's same script, different cast so if you don't wanna read that then don't!.

"Close" however was truly bad. The similar themes doesn't bother me - it was the repetitiveness and the monotony. Ever the optimist, I will rush out and buy her new novel when it is published later today.

Predictable (0/0 people found this helpful)

I've now read quite a few Martina Cole books, the first couple I quite enjoyed. But I'm afraid once you've read one you've read them all. They are so predictable - all the characters are one dimensional, speak exactly the same way and the plotlines are very narrow. I didn't find this book at all well-written - in fact I find Martina Cole keeps repeating herself as to her characters' past lives and what had happened to them etc. She uses bad language in all her books but sometimes I think its just for the sake of it. I got to the end, eventually, but was very disappointed. This book is just so unoriginal and at times boring.
