Small but not cut down (0/0 people found this helpful)

I'd bought this for it small size, but I've been pleasantly surprised by the content.

Its coverage is as about as good as the Pocket Oxford (which is misnamed unless you have unusually large pockets!). And in some respects it beats the Pocket Oxford, particularly when it comes to giving obscure parts of irregular verbs their own headword.

That said, this doesn't have a comprehensive grammar section, which I miss. It does have the declensions of nouns and conjugations of verbs, but lacks coverage of adjectives, adverbs and pronouns.

All in all though, very good value.

Classical (0/0 people found this helpful)

This is a very small dictionary for classical Latin, i.e. from the Roman times. For those who deal with the mediaeval syntax and ecclesiastial Latin would find this a little useless without the use of other reference books as well, as the vocabularly is quite different.

Having said that, it's a very good little reference book. But I still think it would be good if Collins could produce their excellent dictionaries in Latin of uses other than that of the Roman Empire.

Collins books are real gems (4/4 people found this helpful)

In my humble opinion, there is only one decent maker of dictionaries, and that is Collins. I have tried other ones, but they are just not so straightforwards.
I have a learning disability, and have found that these dictionaries explain things simply and clearly, but give enough detail and don't ever make you feel small like some. They also use both the most common words and some more obscure words (but nothing too unusual, as they make all of their dictionaries as concise as possible).
This dictionary will also fit in your pocket (I was that strange child who took this dictionary to school), and is superb value for money. If that's not enough for you, it's also virtually indestructable.
Inter oves lacuum praesta, as they say. If you don't know what that means, you NEED this dictionary.
