(0/1 people found this helpful)i'm writing a story at the moment that involves a lot of latin words so this boook is absolutely fantastic.it has an engllish to latin section and a latin to english section. it's easy to understand and really helpful. i definately reccomend this to anyone who wants to study this truly amazing language or simply wants to find out a few words. a very good latin dictionary (1/5 people found this helpful)
This latin dictionary is very good as it has on top of it a very apprehensive grammar section giving you extra tips for trnsltion.
It beats imilar kind of small dictionaries including the tiny collins. And is even esier to use thn Lewis and short, a very comprehensive.
Do I sometimes not find anything? Yes, odd words even usual ones but as said much better then the other small dictionaries.
If I have one complin it is that when you open it where you need to be it is difficult to keep open so as to get a good overview. Different binding would be good.
Dictionary and much more (13/13 people found this helpful)This is an reasonably priced all-in-one Latin dictionary for both study and reference alike. Beginners and those already proficient in the Latin tongue will find this book both equally useful.
It is actually much more than a dictionary: included is a thorough section on grammar at the back (complete with Verb tables). This supplements a quick reference grammar section at the very start of the book which provides easy access to those tables of the various declensions and conjugations. Also included are brief sections on the alphabet and orthography.
The actual dictionary includes both Latin-English and English-Latin. Verbs are listed in bold as the present indicative and infinitive; Nouns as the nominative and genitive singular. Lozenges, Italics and brackets separate the differing uses of the word (abbreviations are provided at the front). Macrons are provided for long and short vowels. The dictionary doesn't provide pronunciations for the individual words but a guide is provided at the front which should make the pronunciation of Latin fairly clear for all. All in all it is easy to use and well presented.
We also get a section on Roman life and culture including a list of key historical dates, Republican government, organisation of the imperial army and a Roman family tree. It is far too brief to be of use to a serious student of history; in truth it is merely padding, but due to its easy access it is handy to dip into from time to time. Far more useful is a list of Roman geographical names and sections on numerals, dates and measurements. There is also a handy section on Latin Verse (with examples of the various ancient-meters) and a list of Latin terms used in English. This extra stuff solidifies the dictionary as an affordable multi-purpose desktop reference book. Similar Products
