Reader Reviews:Good fun, but a quick read for older children (0/0 people found this helpful)This book tells the story of a girl named Beauty Cookson, who unfortunately isn't very beautiful at all. The girls at her school are all mean to her as her shy, distant personality makes her an easy target. She lives with her mum and her agressive dad; who is constantly firing abuse at poor Beauty. Beauty's mum tries to invent a new nickname for her beloved daughter, by making Cookies. She thinks this will encourage the other girls at school to call beauty 'Cookie.' When Beauty and her mum's life becomes a living hell at the hands of beauty's dad, they decided to start a new life togther elsewhere.
A great book! (0/0 people found this helpful)'Cookie' is one of those books you just can't put down. You'll think that you will stop reading as soon as you get to the next chapter, but another mystery unfolds, so you just have to carry on. It is about a girl, Beauty, who has a useless but loving mum, Dilly, and a horrible dad, Gerry. Night after night, Gerry is rude and mean towards Beauty and her mother, saying how useless they both were. But, he does not know about their secret talent...
Harsh reality rather than pink and fluffy girl's book (0/0 people found this helpful)Story of family break-up usual for a Jaqueline wilson book. Best suited 9-12 year olds. My 10 year old liked it and doesn't seem too upset by the (verbal) abuse that Mum and daughter receive. There is a good ending but she won't tell me so as not to give too much away! So, good story but not the best one for an introduction to J.Wilson, try 'Best Friends' or 'Bad Girls' first.
Disappointing (2/3 people found this helpful)I've read everything Jacqueline Wilson has written and have enjoyed most of them very much (particularly The Illustrated Mum). Her books are a refreshing change from the ubiquitous fantasy/magic stuff which dominates the kids' bestsellers list.
Too much like some of her other books! (1/1 people found this helpful)I guess I'm a bit old for JW now, but I loved her early books so much that I always seem to end up reading her new ones! Like other reviewers here, I found this one really disappointing. It reminded me a lot of some of her other books in different ways, and it seems to me like the author's recycling old ideas. Maybe this is because the publisher knows that everyone is going to buy the books anyway, or am I just being too cynical lol! And I probably will end up up reading her next book even though I didn't like this one much...
