Croatian Aces of World War 2 (Aircraft of the Aces) (2/3 people found this helpful)

Well, here's an irony. The story of Croatia's fighter aces written by two Serbs. If one ignores the historical inconsistencies, for example all the rubbish about 'betrayal' and the fact that the word Bleiburg isn't even mentioned although it clearly falls within the authors' remit, it nevertheless becomes clear that Savic and Ciglic really have made a genuine effort to be objective and have covered their subject factually and with a commendable restraint. Croatia is of course embarrassed about the country's wartime fascist connections but makes no apology whatsoever for its burning desire for independence. Croatians never accepted the existence of a Yugo-slavia and never considered themselves anything other than under occupation for the entire period such an entity existed. This explains why enthusiasm for Germany, rather than Hitler, brought so many otherwise intelligent and skilled people into the sordid collective of fascism.
It would have been much easier for English language readers to digest the material had the mind boggling plethora of Yugo/Croatian air force ranks and unit designations simply been translated into their English equivalents throughout the text, as the protagonists' and place names themselves make it difficult enough for an eye not used to the Croatian language and impedes the fluidity of an otherwise deeply interesting and meticulously researched subject. It should be mentioned however, that during the war Rijeka was in Italy (under the name Fiume) and Bjelovar was (and is) in Croatia, not Slovenija as stated in the book.
John Weal's breathtaking illustrations more than live up to his reputation as the finest profile artist in the business. We must therefore be grateful to Osprey that the subject has at last been examined in more depth and with greater fairness than it has hitherto received.
