Reader Reviews:Not quite there... (4/4 people found this helpful)I bought this book for my girlfriend who is about to move from the UK to Norway as I thought it might provide us with some guidance in the practical matters involved in such a 'project'. It is a good book as regards basic facts about moving to and living in Norway. However, it does tend to include incorrect, outdated and highly irrelevant information as well as sweeping generalizations such as "Norwegians tend not to rinse their dishes after washing up" and "most Norwegian sinks have two taps: one for cold water and one for hot water." One has to question what audience this book is written for. In my opinion this book can only have been written for a mature non-Western audience and I suppose for that purpose the book may be useful. After all, the cultural 'shock' might not be so great for a young westerner? I found that the book fails to incorporate the variety of cultural nuances found within the country, and it feels like it has been written from a very personal point of view. For my 23-year old British girlfriend and myself, the book fell somewhat short of the mark. It provided us with little practical information and I think we'll manage her moving without it! We'll manage without it! Good information (4/5 people found this helpful)I bought this book for my girlfriend when she came from South Africa to live in Norway. I had to read it first of course to see how Norwegians were portrayed. And I found the book quite amusing. The author has in my opinion done a very good job when it comes to describing our habits, food, customs and so on. And it gave information that one can normally not find in the normal tourist guides. I'm going to Thailand later this year and I will buy a Culture Shock Thailand so that I can understand their ways better. Some good information, but cringe worthy too (10/14 people found this helpful)Having bought this book 2 years ago just before I came to live in Norway, I was looking forward to reading it and learning a little more about Norwegians. However, on reading this book, most of it contained information on common sense. Things like "don't be offended when expected to remove your shoes on entering someone's house". Well, duh! I got the impression that it was written for an American audience rather than a European one. Similar ProductsCategoriesAmazon.co.uk places this book into the following categories:
