The delivery and book condition were fine but it was not made clear that it was a very old edition and therefore not as useful as I'd hoped.

I bought this book for my Daughter who is a busy Professional,and a Vegetarian, to assist with ideas for a large party of non-vegetarians.It is very artistically presented and gives shortened versions of many classic recipes from around the world, some of which are Vegetarian.It is like a text book full of ideas for easy refference, and a usefull addition to any Kitchen.

Interesting and great when you are in a bit of a hurry but still need to provide a good meal.

If you're cooking for a special occasion and can take time with the shopping then this is good. However, for everyday cheating you would need a big larder filled with the sort of unusual and exotic items not found in your average kitchen.

Let me preface this by saying that I live alone, perforce DO know my way around the kitchen and am a bit of a dab hand at cooking for one (or else I starve or get bored with a limited range of "ready meals"). So I'm used to picking and choosing from recipe books as not everything is divisible down that far (stews and casseroles particularly - I sometimes do the Irish stew from Delia's Complete Cookery Course but it's interesting judging the right amount of liquid to put in if it's either not to boil dry, or leave the stew tasteless because you've put too much in and the ingredients have flavoured the water.) But I digress...

There are a few recipes in this book that work for me, but mostly they are in Delia's previous books as well, such as the omelette Savoyard and the chicken basque. They are indeed quicker in the "cheat" version and when you have to start cooking each evening after coming home from your full-time job, any amount of time-saving helps or you end up eating at 9 pm and there goes your evening completely. Anything that avoids peeling and boiling potatoes is worth it in my book and the ideas of using frozen mashed potato discs to top a shepherd's pie, or frozen rösti as a substitute for diced potato in that particular omelette, are ones I've happily used. Who cares if it's not the purist way - it's still good food and paying a bit extra for pre-prepared stuff is a trade-off between time and what I can afford that works for me.

Some very specific branded items are not available anywhere I've found - as other reviewers have mentioned, I don't seem to be able to find Heinz Tomato Frito for love nor money, so I looked up what it was and decided to use common-or-garden tinned chopped tomatoes instead as I've been doing for years. Maybe it doesn't taste the same as the tomatoes aren't fried first, but who cares - this is MY version of what's in the book and it works. But then I quite often don't do exactly what the recipe says as I've been cooking long enough to know what I can get away with and what will be awful.

So I've had a few good ideas from it, but it's not the revelation it's made out to be. The particular non-revelation that sticks in my mind is the mushroom risotto recipe which can be summed up as "heat some ready-made mushroom risotto and jazz it up with some extra mushrooms".
