There have been a number of other SAN design books released since reading this one, but it covers the basics very well without dwelling too long on them and then provides a broad spectrum of information to help get your head around the topic and develop further. Quite a bit of low level detail in some places for those who want to get to the nitty gritty so I wouldn't call it a beginners guide. All in all a very readable and useful reference.
