Editorial Review:For Java developers, download time and execution performance significantly limit the practical sphere of Java applets. Server-side Java is the key solution. Developing Java Servlets presents this important technology for proficient Java developers; however, don't look here for a primer to the base Java language. While the book includes numerous Java code examples, the lack of a companion CD is disappointing. There is a reference to the publisher's Web site but it wasn't easy to find the URL in the book. The writing is also a bit choppy in places. To illustrate many of the concepts in the book, a complete sample application is presented. The author uses an online film catalogue system as the book's case study. This example includes database access, user interface implementation and simple shopping basket features to put the technology in perspective. Developing Java Servlets expects expertise in Java and a basic understanding of object-oriented programming going in. However, if you have this background, it is a solid manual to the benefits of this cross-platform server processing architecture. --Stephen W. Plain Topics covered: Reader Reviews:terrible (0/0 people found this helpful)Terrible, I'm expecting for a book comparable to Java Servlet Programming and I'm frustrated. It's a very basic book which comments all and nothing. There are a lot of concepts but in very basic depth. Moreover a lot of concepts are not really about Servlet technology ... waste a lot of time explaining other associated technologies. If you really want to learn servlets in depth with usefull examples it's not your book. I appreciate this book and expect more in next edition (0/0 people found this helpful)Good effort by James Goodwill.Better if he can provide with CD to reduce the user's time . Perfect for the Java programmer who is new to servlets (0/0 people found this helpful)I had never seen a servlet before this book. I was starting a new job and needed a quick jump-start. After reading just half of this book, I was able to start my new job with an understanding of what the servlet actually does. The great thing that this book does is cover all of the various technologies that you can use with servlets. This is the real power. If you have an understanding of Java and are looking for one-stop shopping to get you into servlets, this is the book that will get you there. Much better than other books on the subject. (0/0 people found this helpful)The content is rich compared to previous offerings from this author. Mr. Goodwill gives a thorough treatment of all aspects of servlet design/development. Congratulations. Can't wait to see the next book No Nonsense Practical Guide for the Servlet Developer (0/0 people found this helpful)This book provides clear-cut, practical examples that successively build up to the prototypical ecommerce application - - the web shopping cart. The author does rely on a certain amount of familarity w/ OO concepts but avoids much of the techno jargon found in other texts. A required read for those of us who need real-world examples/explanations for building ecommerce web sites w/ Java technologies CategoriesAmazon.co.uk places this book into the following categories:
