Too much the same (1/1 people found this helpful)

Having read I'm Watching you and now this one I can't help but see a lot of similarities in Karen Rose's stories - yes, the murders are brilliant and keep you in suspense till the very end, but in both books the detectives are Italian, have large close families, have a past lover/partner who is dead and the "love Interest" is a woman on her own, little or no family who is close, the love interest gets captured by the "perp", is rescued, they get married and have a baby, perhaps Karen Rose has found a template for her stories, but it doesn't bode well for wanting to purchase the rest of her books as I feel I will know it too well !

Far Fetched but a Thrilling Read (1/2 people found this helpful)

A former high school teacher of chemistry and physics, Karen lives in Florida with her husband of twenty years and their children. When she's not writing, Karen enjoys traveling, karate (she's just starting!), She now has several best selling books behind her and I must say that you always get value for money in the amount of pages per book. This one was first published in late 2007

The plot of the book revolves around Vito Ciccotelli, a homicide detective, who becomes involved in one of the most bizarre and frightening killings he has ever had to deal with in his career. Called to the scene of a single grave in a field covered with snow, his intuition tells him that there may be even more graves below the covering of snow.

When he calls in the expertise of Sophie Johnson, a female archaeologist, to map out the field, they find a matrix of graves, many of them still empty. Have they disturbed the murderer before he has finished his killing spree? This is no ordinary killer, he is a maniacal artist, obsessed with capturing the moment of death. Not only that, he wants the whole world to see his macabre killings. He believes he can do this by turning the killings into a video game with a difference. In his game, the killings are real . . .

Likely to keep you awake reading it. (1/1 people found this helpful)

Thick book - but worth the aching hands. The plot line interwoven throughout is very good with interesting insights into some of the more gruesome aspects of medieval life and a great balance of characters. Despite its size and the complexity of the plot (which in turn leads to several characters) the whole thing flows extremely well and I didn't start losing my way until 3am - then I had to put it down get a couple of hours sleep and start again this morning!
So that's the plot line. The characters are really very good - the baddy is very bad (and I guarantee if you have children at home who play computer games you will take a closer look at them - the games that is), trouble is he's also very believable. The main characters Sophie the gorgeous historian and archaeologist and Vito the detective are both well drawn with depth and a good range of emotions whilst the rest of the cast have personalities which are well drawn and fit in. The book is fast paced and although we find out a fair amount of background on the main characters the book is never bogged down with heavy explanations.

I have read all of Karen Rose's books to date and she seems to up the tension and emotion in each one. Well written and if you like a good thriller, with some romance and great characters please don't be put off by the size of the book it's a very satisfying read and so are her others.

Worth a read, don't be put off by the size (0/0 people found this helpful)

At first I was a bit put off with the size of the book....it especially shows when it's a paperback. But I gave it a go and ended up reading almost half of it on the plane on the way back from Spain (where I bought it) as it drew me right in. The way she intertwines the happenings being experienced by the different characters, good and bad, is a good layout as if all the characters had their own chapters then it might have gotten a bit bogged down. The story is good and the medieval hint gives it something too. I haven't read any of Karen Rose's other books but this is making me look at buying some of her others to keep me going while the sequel to this one comes out.

Overall I'd recommend it if you like your typical crime ones with a bit of a new twist.
