So trashy! (0/0 people found this helpful)

The funny thing is that at the time i actually quite enjoyed reading this book on holiday. Only in the sense that it was a page turner though, Dan Brown's typical Hollywood thriller style is fulfilling but totally badly written. The characters are cardboard cut outs, their emotions basic, much of the story simply hinging from the solving of one problem to another.

Everything has a very 'Bourne Identity' feel to it but lacks the sophistication of that film, instead dealing with heavy handed and blunt facts - in many ways it is basically a re-write of the already bad Da Vinci Code, changing the setting and swapping the religious context for computers and technology but essentially revolving around the same formula.

In many ways, you can't fault Brown - his books have been massive sellers and they have a very wide appeal - people of all ages would easily be able to enjoy Digital Fortress - but you'd think that as an author he'd want to stretch himself by coming up with something more innovative which this book certainly isn't.

So, if you're going on holiday or need something to read on a long journey, go ahead, this book is perfect for that. But be warned, don't expect to find anything enlightening.

Some of the worst I've ever read (0/0 people found this helpful)

Like many other reviewers I loathed this book. Having read the complete works of Ken Follett, Nelson Demille and Frederick Forsyth and now started on Dan Brown, I'm now stopping and very pleased to say so. 'Da Vinci' og 'Angels' were somewhat OK, but this is completely rubbish. Being an IT professional myself the plot is so stupid I'm in lack of words. (By the way, Ken Follet writes badly too in half of his books)

Shockingly bad (0/0 people found this helpful)

oh dear - its just awful. Stick with the Da Vinci code and stay well away from this pile of tripe. Its truly cringeworthy. Lame plot. Awful characters. It is just BAD.

Not the best introduction to Dan Brown... (0/0 people found this helpful)

This is the first Dan Brown book I've read, having been gifted with 'Digital Fortress', 'Angels and Demons', 'Deception Point' and 'The Da Vinci Code' and to be honest, I'm a little hesitant to read the other 3 now, even after being told that the others, especially 'Angels and Demons' are really worth looking at.

The characters are VERY one-dimensional and you find yourself not caring what happens to them. The 'twists and turns' in the plot are badly conceived and blazingly obvious. Books like this tend to need a re-read to understand thoroughly but you can guess narrative sections easily and it makes the book lack any sparkle.

There are no descriptive sections, making references to environments hazy at best and still not open enough to let your imagination play.

If you're looking for a mind-killer for a quiet afternoon (and that's all it'll take you to read it) then 'Digital Fortress' is for you. If you're looking for some technical explanations and have a thing for computer-nerdery but don't fully understand it, this is for you. If you want an in-depth, thrilling ride, look elsewhere.

It's almost like Chris Ryan got his hands on wikipedia.

On the plus side, the cover-art and layout of the book look quite nice, and the short snappy childish chapters make it easy to find your place again if you need a cup of tea mid-read.

Appalling bad (1/1 people found this helpful)

Dan Browne makes it clear that he doesn't like Spaniards very much. He portrayal of a modern country in this book is both insulting and marked of bigotry. In addition the science basis for the book is plain wrong, with obvious contrivances and plain incorrect facts about historical events (the Nagasaki bomb used plutonium, not uranium). In addition the character portrayal is one-dimensional, mysogonistic and ill conceived. If this is the quality of his other novels I won't be looking I'm afraid.
