Reader Reviews:

5/5 stars

Surprisingly light reading! (4/5 people found this helpful)

I bought this book as a principal guide to my research on watermarks for my final year MEng project. After easily working my way through the first few chapters I realised I had made an excellent buy!

The subject matter is concise and to the point, it is well written and easily understandable. The book tackles the subject matter in a logical order and covers a wide range of subjects from basic message coding to issues of security and robustness in watermarking systems. I was suitably impressed by the way the authors have made a point of explaining the uses and applicatons of watermarking, as well defining the terminology used from the start. The technical content is well presented and in such an interesting and simple way that I have no doubt that most people would understand a lot of the concepts presented in the book, a feature which is very unusual in textbooks, to say the least. For those wishing to pursue examples and see the propsed watermarking schemes in action, the book comes with several programs, written in C, and these are explained and analsed thoroughly. In addition, the authors have used just over 300 references to provide them with material for discussion and to direct the reader for further work. Appendices with background concepts and selected theoretical results, as well as an extensive glossary make this book complete in every respect.

For the researcher, there is no other book available that covers such a broad range of topics and it is the perfect place to start before sifting through the many technical papers that deal with the subject. I recommend this book to anyone who is doing any kind of work on the topic, whether from a signal processing or computer science background, and also to the layman who wants to learn more about the technology used to protect dvd's, mp3's, digital images and more besides.
